John K — Exclusive Pics
“I couldn’t think of a better song to lead with,” said John K when chatting EXCLUSIVELY with HollywoodLife. The main in front of the eponymous John K project stopped by the HollywoodLife studios to chat about his new collaboration with Kelsea Ballerini, a remix of his hit song, “If We Never Met.” First breaking out in 2017 — when his song “OT” was featured by legendary DJ Elvis Duran — John K found himself back in the spotlight with his new track. Within the span of a year, he signed with Epic Records, released a new EP, and had a hit song. Yet, he remained utterly humble about his rising success.
“This is the focus track because as a new artist, this is a message I could see myself completely getting behind being,” he said. “When I signed, I rolled into the label with like eight people. I was like, this is who I am. My team makes me real.” John K kept it real while talking with HollywoodLife about his collaboration, why he loves pop music, and what’s next for this superstar-in-the-making.

“The John K project started in 2015. We really started to gain our identity, our minds around it in ’16. And then we released Runnin‘ in 2016, right?” he tells HollywoodLife EXCLUSIVELY. “So, I think we were like, you know what? This music is good. It’s better than okay. It’s better than most things that we hear. Let’s just start putting stuff out.”

“We literally built this thing from the ground up and just started releasing music independently,” John K tells HollywoodLife EXCLUSIVELY, “and every now and then we’d meet somebody that we really vibed with energy-wise, personality-wise. We invited them into the team and we grew it brick by brick, step-by-step.”

We continued to push and I mean that’s the ‘If We Never Met story, really,” John K tells HollywoodLife EXCLUSIVELY. “It’s just the pieces all coming together. The songs getting better, the song writing getting better.”

“There’s heavy attention to lyrics in this project,” John K tells HollywoodLife. “There is a special focus and attention on melody and lyrics really working together. Just making it feel good and really connect. And it’s hard. I mean it takes another level of attention to detail.
